Material standards specify key indicators such as the chemical composition and mechanical properties of steel, which play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of steel structures. Today, we will discuss Chinese standards and American standards (ASTM).

Chinese Standards
Common steel grades for steel structures in China include Q235B and Q355B. Q235B is a carbon structural steel. The letter "Q" stands for yield strength, the number 235 indicates a yield strength of 235 megapascals (MPa), and "B" represents the quality grade, which requires impact testing at room temperature (20°C). Its carbon content ranges from 0.12% to 0.20%. It exhibits good plasticity, toughness, and weldability, making it suitable for general building structures and less critical mechanical components.
Q355B, on the other hand, is a low-alloy high-strength structural steel with a yield strength of 355 MPa. Compared to Q235B, it contains small amounts of alloying elements such as manganese (Mn), which provide it with higher strength and better overall performance. It is commonly used in construction projects that require higher structural strength, such as bridges and large workshops.
American Standards (ASTM)
The American standard steel grade similar in performance to Q235B is A36, with a yield strength of approximately 250 MPa (36 ksi). A36 is widely used in general construction and structural applications, offering good machinability and weldability. Its carbon content is below 0.29%, which is slightly broader in range compared to Q235B.
The American standard material corresponding to Q355B is A572 Grade 50, with a yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi). The A572 series enhances strength through the addition of alloying elements such as niobium (Nb) and vanadium (V), making it widely applicable in construction, bridges, machinery manufacturing, and other fields. In terms of chemical properties, A572 Grade 50 differs from Q355B in the types and amounts of alloying elements added, which also leads to variations in certain performance characteristics between the two.
